Tips for Developing Greater Self-Awareness

This entry was posted in Life Coaching and tagged , , on by .

Most of us go through our days on autopilot. We wake up, go to work, return home and do it all over again. We generally don’t think about how the day went or the emotions we felt. But practicing self-awareness is an important skill that can help you get more out of life.

So how do you develop greater self-awareness? Even though this is an abstract concept, self-awareness is something that you can learn to improve with the right tools and a little practice. You can learn some of these skills by meeting with a life coach in Los Angeles who can help you see things more clearly.

Below are some tips for becoming more self-aware in your life.

Pay attention to what bothers you about other people.

In a previous post, we talked about how to control your reactions to other people. Part of this is recognizing what bothers you about other people, as this can be a reflection of something you don’t like in yourself.

It’s normal to have aspects of ourselves that we’re not proud of, such as avoiding conflict. If you can’t change these things, you can end up ignoring them or living in denial. So, the next time someone irritates you, ask yourself if it’s because it reminds you of something you dislike in yourself.

Practice mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness meditation is an extremely valuable tool that can help with self-awareness. The goal of this practice is to keep your attention focused on your breath and prevent your mind from wandering.

The more you practice mindfulness meditation, the easier it gets to learn about how your thoughts and emotions work. For example, overthinking causes you to become lost in your thoughts, assuming they’re true. But regular meditation will open your mind to the fact that you are more than your thoughts.

Clarify your goals and values.

If you’re like most people, the busyness of life takes over, leaving you with very little time for self-reflection, especially your personal values. Part of being self-aware means becoming aware of the things that really matter to you.

Give yourself time to reflect on your personal goals and the things that bring you satisfaction. There’s no right or wrong way to go about this, but you can start by giving yourself dedicated time to reflect on your goals and what you really want in life.

Learn new skills.

Forcing yourself to think and act in new ways can challenge you to think outside the box. Too often, we get so caught up in the daily grind of activities, we develop a narrowness of mind. And this can give you a false sense of security that you know how things work.

By branching out and learning new skills, you can exercise your mind and develop greater self-awareness. This is one of the reasons why people like to travel. They’re introduced to new ways of thinking and acting, helping them step out of their comfort zones.
