How You Can Use Social Distancing To Better Yourself

Social distancing is one of the best tools we have to fight highly contagious infections like the novel coronavirus. The goal of social distancing is to keep space between you and others when you’re outside the home. This translates to staying 6 feet away from others, avoiding large gatherings and not mixing households.

While social distancing allows us to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, it can be incredibly difficult to live this way for an extended period of time. We are social creatures, and the desire to be with others makes social distancing a struggle at times. This is why it’s important to keep a healthy perspective and use this time to strengthen yourself from within.

Here are some of the ways that you can use social distancing to better yourself.

Learn to enjoy your own company.

You have to live with yourself every second of every day, so you should find happiness from within. Sadly, some people do not enjoy their own company and end up relying on others for fun, happiness and distraction from their problems. Don’t fall into this trap!

Spend some time getting to know yourself again. Discover your personality, your core values, your likes and dislikes and more. When you are free of judgement and influence, you can better understand what makes you different. You should never be ashamed of who you are. Here are some ways to unlock your true self.

Clear and recharge your mind.

Keeping busy is a good thing, but you still need to balance this with some me-time. Otherwise, your thoughts and feelings will continue to be influenced by the people around you, causing you to forget what’s really important.

Social distance gives your brain a chance to rest and replenish itself. This will allow you to think more clearly and gain insight into your own thoughts and feelings. By the end of this, there should be a deeper connection between your mind, body and soul.

Encourage creativity and deep thinking.

Being alone forces you to think outside the box. You’re not being entertained by friends and coworkers, so you need to make your own fun. Interestingly, we tend to be most creative when we’re alone. You have the privacy and quiet time to let the creative juices flow, as well as few distractions to break this relaxing state.

In addition to exploring your creative side, you can also practice deep thinking. Daily chores and responsibilities typically consume our minds, but now you are home and have less running around to do. Use this time to engage in deep thought, which in turn, encourages creative thinking.

Work through problems more effectively.

It’s hard to think through problems and solutions when you’re constantly distracted by other people and things. If you’ve been dealing with stress, use this time to work through it and let go of it. Trauma can live in the body, so it’s important not to let it bottle up and cause problems for your mental, physical and spiritual health.

Enhance your relationships with others.

Even though you’re physically distancing yourself from others doesn’t mean you can’t have thriving relationships. In fact, now is a great time to improve the health of your relationships. You likely have more free time on your hands and something to talk about!

Stay connected through technology, but don’t hesitate to call someone on the phone or write them a letter. These are great ways to stay in touch – and more personal, too! As you learn more about yourself, you’ll find it’s easier to be a better friend and value the people in your life.
