Choose Happiness! 7 Intentional Steps to Being Happy

This entry was posted in Life Coaching and tagged , , on by .

Most of us would like to be a little happier, but happiness doesn’t always come easily. It can be especially hard to find happiness when you have a lot of stress or negatives in your life, such as a tedious job or an unkind spouse. But you have more control over your happiness than you think.

Yes, happiness is a choice! As Abraham Lincoln said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Even if things aren’t great in your life, you can still choose happiness. Happy people are not happy because of people or possessions – they are happy by choice.

As the best psychic in Los Angeles, Jack Rourke can help you find happiness! Aside from scheduling a life coaching session, here are seven intentional steps to take to be happy.

1. Stop Chasing Happiness

This might sound counterproductive, but it’s actually quite important. Many people chase the idea of happiness. But all this does is reinforce that happiness is a reward rather than an emotion that you should feel every day. Instead of chasing happiness, allow yourself to feel happy with everyday things in life, such as a beautiful sunset or warm shower.

2. Smile More

Smiling is powerful. Not only does it warm the people around you, which can lead to a more positive environment, but also it can trick your brain into being happy. It’s true – science has found that smiling can lift your mood, lower stress, boost immunity and potentially prolong your life.

3. Count Your Blessings

Every morning, get into the habit of counting your blessings. Happy people focus on the positive things in their lives. Even when circumstances are tough, there is always something to be grateful for. Just the simple fact that you can get out of bed and start your day is a blessing!

4. Say Positive Affirmations

According to the National Science Foundation, the average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day. Of those, 80 percent are negative and 95 percent are repetitive. With so much negative thinking happening in the human brain, it’s important to kick some of those thoughts out and replace them with happy ones!

This is why saying positive affirmations is a helpful practice that can help change your mindset. When used daily, affirmations can release stress, build confidence and improve your outlook. Here are some simple affirmations to start with

5. Practice Good Self-Care

It’s easier to be happy when you’re meeting your basic needs. Make sure that you take care of yourself by eating healthy, getting 7-9 hours of sleep at night and exercising daily. Also leave time to do the things you enjoy – you need time to appreciate yourself and the things that bring you happiness.

6. Treat Others Well

The golden rule of “treat others the way you would want to be treated” is an important one. Everyone wants to be treated kindly, so treat the people you meet with patience and kindness. Sure, some people might not have earned it, but acting this way creates a positive environment and stops you from getting worked up over little things. You’ll get satisfaction from treating others well, and you’ll get that same friendliness in return (most of the time!).

7. Find Purpose in Your Pain

And lastly, search for benefit in your pain. This can be difficult, as no one wants to feel pain. But it’s something that we all experience in our lives. Remind yourself that these difficult moments will pass, and look for the greater purpose in your suffering. At the very least, you will come out stronger and more resilient.
